What are the Main Routes of Mount Ararat?

There are two main routes for climbers who want to climb Mount Ararat:

  1. Southeast (Doğubayazıt) route and the less used Northern (Iğdır) route. These routes vary in terms of difficulty levels and infrastructure facilities. It is important for climbers to know these routes well and choose the appropriate one according to their goals and experience levels.

The most common and safe route is the southeast route via Doğubayazıt. This route has been preferred by guided groups for years, is a well-known and organized route. The climb usually starts from Çevirme or Eli villages at an altitude of 2,200–2,500 meters. The first camp area is set up at 3,200 meters, and the second camp area is set up at 4,200 meters. The summit climb usually starts at night and the 5,137-meter summit is reached in the morning. The camp areas are clear, the walking paths are open, and it is possible to provide logistical support (mules, food, water, guidance). For this reason, it stands out as the most suitable route for those who will climb for the first time. The most preferred route during the Mount Ararat climbing season is the Southeast route.

The 2nd route, the northern route, starts from Iğdır and proceeds through Karakoyun Yaylası. However, this route is less preferred due to natural conditions. The paths are less clear, it is more difficult to find directions, and the campsites are not clear. This route is an alternative that requires more improvisation and is recommended only for experienced climbers.

Professional guidance is recommended for a safe and successful climb on both routes. Tours usually provide this service and undertake the organization of the route with camping equipment.

As a result, the Doğubayazıt southeast route stands out as the most accessible and safe option for both beginners and regular climbers in a climb to Mount Ararat. The northern route offers an alternative for experienced climbers who prefer more challenging conditions.
